Smartphone Hardening Privacy non-root Guide 2.0 (for normal people)
I forgot to post it here, might be valuable as it debloats phones of Google and other corporation software in general. The guide is nearly fully FOSS supported, and the only non FOSS XDA app does not require internet to function. NOTE (June) 15/06/2020: r_privacy moderator trai_dep revengefully deleted my highly gilded 1.0 guide post before. UPDATED 16/8/2020: Major edit, replaced closed source App Ops and Shizuku with AppOpsX (Free Open source) on F-Droid. This guide is nearly FOSS supported now. UPDATED 17/9/2020: MAJOR EDIT, replaced closed source Access Dots with Privacy Indicator (FOSS) on Izzy's F-Droid repo. This guide is completely FOSS. Hello! I am the founder of /privatelife . Finally my smartphone non root guide is back, and there are some big upgrades. I was taking time to test everything myself on my daily driver, so apologies for keeping everyone in the wait, but stability and ease of use is the important goal to strive in my playbook. Privacy must be accessible to maximum amount of people without being annoying or tedious. A kind request to share this guide to any privacy seeker.
User and device requirement
ANY Android 9+ device
knowledge of how to copy-paste commands in Linux or Mac Terminal/MS-DOS Command Prompt (for ADB, it is very simple, trust me)
ALL users must follow these steps before "for nerdy users" section. Firstly, if your device is filled to the brim or used for long time, I recommend backing up your data and factory resetting for clean slate start.
Sign out all your Google and Huawei/Samsung/other phonemaker accounts from your device so that SettingsAccounts do not show any sign-ins except WhatsApp/Telegram
Make DIY camera covers, for front camera notch use a tiny appropriate-sized thin opaque plastic cutout and use an invisible tape to stick it in place, replace every month (cost: tape roll and one minute of your time per month). My rear camera cover
Install NetGuard app firewall (see NOTE) from F-Droid and set it up with [privacy based DNS like Uncensored DNS or Tenta DNS or AdGuard DNS]
NOTE: NetGuard with Energized Ultimate HOSTS file with any one of the above mentioned DNS providers is the ultimate solution. NOTE: Set DNS provider address in Settings -> Advanced settings VPN IPv4, IPv6 and DNS
In F-Droid store, open Repositories via the 3 dot menu on top right and add the following links below:
Go back to F-Droid store home screen, and hit the update button beside the 3 dot menu.
LIST OF APPS TO GET
Get Firefox Beta web browser from F-Droid (install uBlock Origin addon inside (if technically advanced, try doing this)). Also get Firefox Klar if you like a separate incognito browser.
Get Aurora Store from F-Droid for apps from Play Store without actually using Play Store, use Anonymous option to sign in
for 3rd party APKs source them only from APKMirror OR APKPure OR APKMonk, quite trusted, BUT TRY AND AVOID IT IF POSSIBLE
Get Privacy Indicator from F-Droid for iOS 14 like camera/mic dot indicator feature
Get OSMAnd+ from F-Droid or Qwant Maps inside web browser for maps and/or print physical maps if you live and travel in one or two states or districts.
NOTE: Qwant Maps has better search results than OSMAnd+
Get PilferShush Jammer from F-Droid to block microphone (use this in malls, restaurants or such public places if you can to prevent beacon tracking)
Get OpenBoard (user friendly) OR AnySoftKeyboard (nerd friendly) from F-Droid instead of Google GBoard, Microsoft SwiftKey et al, they are closed source keylogger USA spyware
Get FTP Server (Free) from F-Droid and FileZilla on computer for computer-to-phone internet less file sharing
NOTE: for phone-computer sync or sharing, can TRY KDE Connect, available for Android, Windows, Linux
Get TrebleShot instead of SHAREIt for phone to phone file sharing
Get K-9 Mail or FairEmail as e-mail client
Get NewPipe for YouTube watching, or YouTube in Firefox Preview/Klar
Get QKSMS from F-Droid as SMS client app
Get Shelter from F-Droid to sandbox potential apps that you must use (eg WhatsApp or Discord or Signal)
Get SuperFreezZ from F-Droid to freeze any apps from running in background
Get Librera Pro from F-Droid for PDF reader
Get ImgurViewer from F-Droid for opening reddit/imguother image links without invasive tracking
Get InstaGrabber from F-Droid for opening Instagram profiles or pictures without invasive tracking (seems like a revived fork is here, thanks u/sad_plan )
Get GreenTooth from F-Droid to set Bluetooth to disable after you have used it
Get Material Files or Simple File Manager from F-Droid for file manager app
Get ImagePipe from F-Droid if you share lot of pictures, and want to clear EXIF metadata snooping (often photos contain phone model, location, time, date)
Get Note Crypt Pro from F-Droid for encrypted note taking app
Get Vinyl Music Player from F-Droid for music player
Get VLC from F-Droid for video player
CRITICAL FOR CLIPBOARD, LOCATION AND OTHER APP FUNCTION BLOCKING
I would say this is one of the critical improvements in my guide, and will solve the problem of clipboard and coarse location snooping among other things. AppOpsX is a free, open source app that allows to manage granular app permissions not visible normally, with the help of ADB authorisation without root. This app can finely control what granular information apps can access on your phone, which is not shown in app permissions regularly accessible to us. Now that you would have set up your phone with installing apps, now is a good time to perform this procedure. Step 1: Install AppOpsX from F-Droid. (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.zzzmode.appopsx/) Step 2: Plug phone to computer, and enable USB debugging in Settings Developer Options (you probably already did this in the starting of the guide) Step 3: Keep phone plugged into computer until the end of this procedure! Open AppOpsX app. Step 4: On computer, type commands in order: adb devices adb tcpip 5555 adb shell sh /sdcard/Android/data/com.zzzmode.appopsx/opsx.sh & Step 5: Now open "AppOpsX" app, and:
disable "read clipboard" for apps except your messengers, notepad, office suite, virtual keyboard, clipboard monitor apps et al.
NOTE: Most apps that have text field to copy/paste text require this permission.
disable "modify clipboard" for every app except for your virtual keyboard or office suite app or clipboard monitostack special apps.
disable "GPS", "precise location", "approximate location" and "coarse location" for every app except your maps app (Firefox and OSMAnd+)
disable "calendar" for every app except your calendar and email app
disable "read contacts", "modify contacts" and "get contacts" for every app except your "Phone", "Phone Services", "Phone/Messaging Storage", contacts and messenger apps
disable all "send/receive/view messages" permissions for every app except "Phone", "Phone Services", "Phone/Messaging Storage", QKSMS, contacts, dialler and messenger apps
disable "body sensors" and "recognise physical activity" for every app except games needing gyroscope, or any compass dependent app like camera or bubble leveling app
disable "camera" for every app except your camera and messenger apps
disable "record audio" for every app except camera, recorder, dialler and messenger apps
disable all "Phone" permissions for apps except your SMS app (like QKSMS) and Contacts, Dialler and call recorder apps
disable "change WiFi state" for every app except file sharing apps (like TrebleShot)
disable "display over other apps" for any third party app not from F-Droid
disable "read storage" and "write storage" for apps except file manager, file sharing app and messenger apps
enable all permissions for "Phone", "Phone Services" and "Phone/Messaging Storage" system apps, critical for cell radio calling and sending SMS
Step 6: Profit! Now you can plug off phone from computer. NOTE: Remember to use AppOpsX everytime you install a new app outside of F-Droid store, which is done not too often by people.
FOR NERDY USERS
Get App Manager from Izzy's F-Droid repo (here) to inspect app's manifest, trackers, activities, receivers, services and even signatures via Exodus Privacy built-in, all without root
Get Warden from Izzy's F-Droid repo (here) for checking loggers (rest app is inferior to App Manager)
HOW TO USE NETGUARD
By default, all apps will be blacklisted from WiFi and mobile data access. If not, go to Settings via 3 dot menu Defaults (white/blacklist) Toggle on "Block WiFi", "Block mobile" and "Block roaming" Whitelist your web browsers, messengers (WhatsApp, Zoom et al), file sharing apps, download managers, "Aurora Store" app and any game if needs internet and give them WiFi and mobile data access. Also, whitelist "Downloads" and "Download Manager" as these are system apps that allow web browsers and other apps without built-in downloader to download files. Whitelisting this will keep apps and system stable.
WHICH PHONE BRANDS ARE GOOD AND BAD? (FACTS)
Now we will need to evaluate what manufacturers are relatively safe, no appeasing, I will be blunt. I will make tier lists to help. I will give explanation for each, so read before jumping with pitchforks. NOTE: If you have anti-Chinese political allergy, kindly read facts, or choose the other non-Chinese options listed. Tier 1: Huawei/Honor, Asus, Nokia, Motorola, Sony, LG, FairPhone Tier 2: Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Realme Tier NOPE NOT AT ALL: Google FairPhone: Clean software, ethical, recyclable components, good phone but bit extra price for midrange hardware. Status: good. Huawei: (still no evidence by US government after one year of market protectionism ban, contrary to what Sinophobic US propaganda and condemned joke research papers (refer to this for why), may make you believe, all countries except US, Australia, Japan and UK are allowing them for 5G participation, there is absolutely ZERO EVIDENCE against specifically Huawei (does not count other Chinese companies), earlier ironically audited by UK GCHQ to be safe and on any of their global devices, to date there has been no telemetry found IFF you do NOT use Huawei ID account or Huawei AppGallery store (as instructed above). I have an OpenKirin rooted unlocked Honor 6X, and now a locked P30 Lite to confirm this. If Huawei's CEO is a former PLA technician, so do plenty US companies. What does it prove? NOTE: Real reason for this propaganda ban is USA could not monopolise 5G unlike it did 4G, and so they are playing their cards to put China out of commission. And Huawei did not steal 5G from USA, since USA does not even have a proper 5G vendor yet. To add, for the rest of world outside China it is better to own a device from a country which has no jurisdiction over them, and you can use their phones without Huawei and Google accounts very safely. BONUS: baseband modem not associated with NSA. Also, good cameras, battery, display and performance in general. Status: good. Asus, Sony, Motorola: their software is nearly stock, and as such quite beneficial and peace of mind assuring. Status: good. LG: less stock-y software, still good. Good cameras. display too. Status: good. Nokia: a bit of skepticism here with them helping spy with nexus with Russia's MTS and recently found Chinese telemetry as well, but nothing that NetGuard cannot stop by blocking domains via HOSTS from interacting with your device. Status: Potential issues, can be mitigated. Samsung: Multiple issues with Qihoo 360 on phones with IMEI MAC sent over HTTP, Samsung Pay selling user data with no optout till now, Replicant devs discovering backdoors, Knox hardware blackbox with no idea what microcode it runs, certification from NSA even worrying, lockscreen and notification ads in OneUI, ads on Smart TVs, this all accounts to being quite shady company, but Blokada or NetGuard can mitigate it. Status: avoid for other brands if possible. Xiaomi: They have quite a bit of telemetry in their MIUI skin, similar to Samsung. Now they have tracking in Incognito Mode in their Browser as well. Status: avoid unless you implement my guide properly. OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo: They have considerably less telemetry and ads, better than Samsung and Xiaomi. But they will start doing the same thing as Realme which I will mention below soon. Status: potential but passable for now. Realme: They are implementing ads into their UI, which will soon come to Oppo and Vivo phones too, a bit of an issue. This allows for telemetry and tracking concerns. Status: avoid if possible. Google: In general an evil megacorp, Titan M security chip is self-claimed to be great on Pixels, but there is no way to verify if the microcode it contains is the same as that open sourced by Google. Having faith in Google's promise of their proprietary closed source chip being clean is like having faith in cyanide not killing a person. Moreover, they are known as:
NSA partner and collecting data and spy on users in googolplex capacity
use dark patterns in their software to make users accept their TOS to spy
repeated lies about how their data collection works claiming anonymity
forcing users to use their Play Services which is spyware and scareware
monopolising the web and internet via AMP
use of non standard web browser libraries and known attempts to cripple lone standing ethical competitors like Firefox and Gecko web engine (now with Microsoft making their default Edge Chromium-based too)
TL;DR there is no summary, privacy is an indepth topic and you must take a couple of hours to go through this simple guide, as long as it looks it should clear all your concerns with smartphone privacy. This is the best you can do without rooting or modding a phone, and it is working for me since almost a year now, personally tested and verified on my locked P30 Lite. I have a history of rooting and modding phones, one being an Honor 6X before Huawei disabled unlocking policy, one being a Xiaomi and one being a Lenovo before that. Also, one Samsung Galaxy S2 long time ago. Credit to w1nst0n for the Universal Android Debloater (authorised me to use his tool). Hope this guide serves as a great tool for any privacy seeker.

Smartphone Hardening non-root Guide 2.0 (for normal people)
NOTE (June) 15/06/2020: r_privacy moderator trai_dep revengefully deleted my highly gilded 1.0 guide post before. UPDATED 16/8/2020: Major edit, replaced closed source App Ops and Shizuku with AppOpsX (Free Open source) on F-Droid. This guide is nearly FOSS supported now. UPDATED 17/9/2020: MAJOR EDIT, replaced closed source Access Dots with Privacy Indicator (FOSS) on Izzy's F-Droid repo. This guide is completely FOSS. Hello!

NOTE: Remember to use AppOpsX everytime you install a new app outside of F-Droid store, which is done not too often by people.

use of non standard web browser libraries and known attempts to cripple lone standing ethical competitors like Firefox and Gecko web engine (now with Microsoft making their default Edge Chromium-based too)
TL;DR there is no summary, privacy is an indepth topic and you must take a couple of hours to go through this simple guide, as long as it looks it should clear all your concerns with smartphone privacy.
How I got Youtube Kids on the kids freetime profile of the Kindle Fire
I have had a really hard time getting YouTube Kids onto the kid's profile of their tablets. The devices are great except how they have locked out the Google Play. But I finally figured it out, got it working last night. Thought I'd share for anyone else getting as frustrated as I was. Here is how I got Youtube Kids on the kids freetime profile of the Kindle Fire. We have Kindle Fire 8, 8th generation. To set up youtube on the Parent's profile:
On the Kindle Fire follow the instructions on this link to get the proper apk files for the device. This will install the Youtube Kids to the parent profile.
https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/12/25/install-play-store-amazon-fire-tablet/ To get this and any Google Play Store apps to the child profile, you need to transfer the files over to the kids profile. I tried to do this with the SD card and File Manager, but it would not recognize it as a storage device, I think maybe because I had it formatted as additional storage not portable storage. Or maybe Amazon locked this out to make life more difficult. Either way, I used OneDrive. You can probably use other cloud storage apps. Follow the below steps. 2) Use a computer and go to the same link as above and download the apk files to one drive. Make sure to get the proper files for your Kindle Fire model, or it will not work. NOTE 1. You must Log in or make a OneDrive account if you don't have one. Note 2. there probably is a way to copy the apk files downloaded in step 1 to the OneDrive app in the Kindle Fire, but I couldn't figure it out. So I used a computer. Note 3. This Reddit post helped me figure this step out, [https://www.reddit.com/kindlefire/comments/6iuysn/how\\\_to\\\_add\\\_google\\\_play\\\_apps\\\_to\\\_child\\\_profile/\](https://www.reddit.com/kindlefire/comments/6iuysn/how\_to\_add\_google\_play\_apps\_to\_child\_profile/). 3) On the kindle Fire in the parent profile, go to the app store and download these apps. Use the Amazon Kids feature to share them with the kids profile
a) File Manager b) GoToApp (this costs $3). c) OneDrive
Note: You need the GoToApp to see all the side loaded apps in the Child's profile. They won't show up in the main page. Plus it is handy to organize the kids apps too.
4) Switch the Kindle Fire to the child's profile. You should see the new apps there, it may take a few seconds for them to load. 5) Open OneDrive, log in and find the apk files you saved in step 2. Select them and save them to the Download folder on the device. Exit OneDrive 6) Open the File Manager app and run the apk files in the same order as step 1: You will have to enable apps from unknown sources here too, it should prompt you to do this. 1 - com.google.gsf.login 2 - com.google.android.gsf 3 - com.google.android.gms 4 - com.android.vending Exit File Manager. 7) open the GoToApp, it will go through an initial setup and auto create folders based on the apps already installed on the device. -scroll the top slider bar to the right to see the All Apps folder, -scroll down to the Google Playstore (it's under P, not G). -Open it and log in with your Google info. -Search for YouTube Kids. and download it. Note: Any apps you download from Google Play will not show up in the main screen. You will have to open the GoToApp to use them. 8) In the GoToApp -scroll the top folder bar to the right to see the All Apps folder, -scroll down to YouTube Kids and log in with your regular info. Et Voila. It should work now. 9) To clean things up a bit, I created a new folder in GoToApp called MOVIES and moved the YouTube Kids and Netflix there. Then in the settings I made it the default menu when it's opened so the kids see the movies in one place. If you click around in the GoToApp you can organize all the apps in folders, give them cool icons, arrange them, hide folders etc.. it's a pretty handy tool. I also put all their school apps in another folder - this was the main reason we bought the Fire tablets, when our school went remote last March. The games and movies was a bonus. 10) From the Parent's profile, I removed the OneDrive and File Manager from the kid's profile just to keep it clean. And you may not want to leave it there for the kids to access openly. Hope that helps.
Ever since Tim Cook became the new CEO of Apple, they've just been going downhill. I've been meaning to write this rant for months so I can use it whenever the argument comes up, but have been putting it off. I hate Apple and I am an Android user, so if you're looking for an unbiased rant this is definitely not it. In this rant I will highlight everything I hate about Apple, and why you should never support them or buy any of their products. This is a throwaway account so iOS fanboys don't attack everything I know. Let's hop right in to it: Planned Obsolescence Every device gets obsolete over time, with the latest updates (system & apps) demanding more resources that it can't provide. But Apple does this on purpose. Their OS detects what phone you have, and if it's old enough they'll slow it down on purpose, so you feel like you have to buy a new phone. They've been doing/planning this for years, and they still do. iTunes iTunes is literal garbage, and it's almost insulting. Why do I need a program, just to access most of my phone's contents? On Android, you can read and write all of the phones contents, while on iPhones, you can only read/copy over pictures and videos without installing iTunes. I am competent enough to drag files to and from my device, and I could do that if iPhones weren't read-only without their program. Installing iTunes on any non-Apple computer always puts hidden useless bloatware and files on your computer, like "iPad Service" "iPod Service" and even if I uninstall they never completely remove everything, every nook and cranny of my programs folders now has Apple garbage in them. Also why do you need an iCloud account just to download apps from the app store? They treat us like babies. Costs more, does less Why do Apple's newest phones cost over $1,000? I could buy an epic gaming PC with that money, or even a car if I'm lucky. The new "budget" iPhone 12 mini for $730 has the same price as the average Android, which can do more than their most expensive iPhone. Quite literally and quite literally. Jailbreaking your iPhone introduces features that already come with stock Android. And don't even get me started on their storage prices, storage is cheap nowadays yet they want you to pay big bucks a month while on Android you make a one time payment for a microSD card of your choice and you never have to pay again!! Seriously.e Android has way more customizability On an iPhone, you can't customize more than changing your wallpaper and turning on dark mode. On Android, you can download whatever phone scheme you want (from the galaxy themes app on samsung phones) and change the entire look of your phone (including the keyboard). Many more companies that make Android phones Because Android is open source, you will find many more manufacturers of Android phones than of iOS phones. This means you have many more options when it comes to what features you want and your budget. Apple users will claim that it's easier to buy from one company and a closed source, but it's really not, you're just lazy. Since there's many more options, if there's a company you don't like and has been making bad decisions recently (specifically samsung) then you can just go to another one. Apple is anti-consumer Apple is so anti-consumerthat it's overlooked by everyone. They removed the headphone jack, a feature every phone besides their newest ones has had for the last 15 years, so that they can charge you for a dongle just so you can use the headphone jack and charge at the same time. Like wtf, that makes absolutely no sense. If you're going to sell a headphone jack dongle, just include a goddamn headphone jack in your phones. They claim there's "no space" in the phone for the headphone jack, but that's an utter lie. You also have to buy dongles,JUST TO USE USB (not type C) on the newest MacBooks. That completely defeats the purpose of it being a portable laptop. If I wanted to use a million dongles just to use common USB items then I would've gotten a desktop computer. If I wanted a more portable option with less features then I would've just bought a phone. Just because it's thinner and has no fans doesn't mean it's better at all, stop removing ports from your computers Apple. Another thing they removed was the fingerprint sensor. Android phones have more ways to unlock your phone than you can count on one hand, and that includes both face recognition and a fingerprint sensor. They could've put the fingerprint sensor on the Apple logo on the back of their phones ever since the home button was removed, but they won't. They also tried suing a repair shop owner by the name of Henrik Huseby, who was apparently repairing iPhones with "non-genuine" parts. Apple, you must understand that once you buy the phone, you can do whatever the hell you want with it, because you own it. It's that simple. Apple also claims to want to "reduce environmental waste" while at the same time, the iPhone 12 is so ridiculously anti-repair that it's nearly impossible to do anything to it unless you send it to the "geniuses" over at Apple, which effectively creates more waste than they've ever saved. iPhones are very fragile Dropping your iPhone that's made completely out of glass from a foot off the ground is a guaranteed way to have it shatter in to a million pieces, so you better be careful because you paid over $1,000 for that phone. (And if you shatter the back glass, it's difficult to repair so you're better off just buying a new phone or sticking with shattered glass) Permanent notifications, in the settings app On both my old iPhone and my old iPad they had permanent notifications that you couldn't get rid of, in the settings app (stupidest app for that) to set up random things like Apple pay and 2FA, and if you ignore the notifications they'll just come back up. This is very annoying. Stealing features from Android, then making a big deal out of it With the last few iPhones, Apple has been making a big deal out of the new features they added, most of which Android has had for years. (Refer back to "Costs more, does less") things like widgets, swipe typing, default apps, 5G and more. (Yes, I know Android didn't create 5G, it's that Apple took so long to add it to their phones when the first 5G phones came out long before the iPhone 12. Be quiet Apple fans.) They don't include a charger or earbuds now It's always expected of phone manufacturers that they include at least a charger with their phones, but Apple can't even do that, and now you have to pay for it separately? Seriously, who the hell thought that was a good idea? And they're supposedly a "luxury" brand, yet can't even include cheap earbuds with new phones. This proves that they truly only care about the money. Android is much better for gaming The newest iPhone 12 only has 6GB of ram and 6 cores while a Huawei phone released 2 years ago has 8GB of ram and 8 cores, plus you can overclock your CPU and GPU on Android phones, so you're guaranteed to have a better gaming experience on the newest Android phones rather than the newest iPhones. No third party app stores or APKs on iOS If there's not an app available on the play store, you can download it in the form of an APK or a third party app store. Apple would never do that because they're so controlling of everything they sell. I know this makes piracy much easier, but that's really not a big deal. Some things Apple fans say on this topic are "It just works" Only if you have the newest phone which costs big bucks. (Refer back to "Planned Obsolescence") "It's simple and friendly, Android is too complex and I don't like the look of it" This is by far the dumbest one I've heard, Android is not complex at all, It's only complex if you make it complex. Android is just as friendly as iOS. If you don't like the look of it, you can customize it to look the way you want. (Refer back to "Android has way more customizability") "Brokedroid" "Every Android I've ever used is shit" Brokedroid? Lmao. So apparently now I can be unironically ridiculed because I didn't spend over $1,000 on my phone? iPhone, more like ShitePhone. If every Android phone you've ever used is shit, then you're using old garbage Android phones, use a newer one before you come to that conclusion. Apple was founded on April fools day, because their company is a joke. The biggest joke ever. That's about all I could think of and all I have to say about this topic, thank you for reading my rant. If you have anything for me to add to this rant (whether you like android or apple), comment it and I'll add it. Update: Here's more things I recently found out: During the Hong Kong Protests, Apple sided with China, removing a HK protest map from their app store.Source They fucking stand with China? China is a communist dictatorship and has one of the most corrupt governments in the world, this is proof they absolutely are evil. According to Apple: "We created the App Store to be a safe and trusted place to discover apps. We have learned that an app,HKmap.live*, has been used in ways that endanger law enforcement and residents in Hong Kong. Many concerned customers in Hong Kong have contacted us about this app and we immediately began investigating it. The app displays police locations and we have verified with the Hong Kong Cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau that the app has been used to target and ambush police, threaten public safety, and criminals have used it to victimize residents in areas where they know there is no law enforcement. This app violates our guidelines and local laws, and we have removed it from the App Store.*" Endangering law enforcement and residents? Apple is either lying (which is the most probable answer) or they're just fucking stupid and haven't done any research before removing this app. I bet 90% of these "reports" coming from "concerned customers" in HK are total bullshit. There are lots of apps and products you can buy to display the location of and listen to police radios. Apple is so fucking stupid. Apple bought the brand/company Beats just to kill them off and redirect people to their services So everyone knows about Beats by Dre, they were popular before Apple bought them. But Apple saw the competition, and bought Beats just to kill them off. That's why they have been slowly fading from peoples minds ever since the big purchase. Here's a video about it $1,000 piece of metal (the mac stand), $700 small plastic wheels (the mac pro wheels) and the $300 book literally filled with just images of old Apple products that probably took 1 hour to make. 3 letters:W h y ?
Hi all, I relied on this sub for advice on what spin bike to buy, so thought I’d pay it forward by leaving a thorough review. After reading some threads on this sub, watching YouTube reviews, asking friends with lots of different brands, and taking into account the way I like to work out, I bought a Stryde bike two weeks ago. TL;DR: The Stryde bike is a wonderful bike with all the upscale features — at a more affordable price with quicker delivery — and lots of options besides having to pay for a pricey subscription app for perpetuity. But it has some glitches with its stat-keeping, which might annoy some people. What I was looking for: I’m not a dedicated spinner. I’ve been to a handful of SoulCycle classes, which I’ve enjoyed, but I usually like reformer pilates, vinyasa yoga, cardio dance classes, or just riding my actual bike outside. I wanted a bike to blow off steam amid covid times, but didn’t want to be locked into a pricey app, and didn’t want to feel guilty about using it less after the vaccine is available and I’m back to my Pilates studio. I was initially drawn to the Stryde bike because it has a lot of the high-end features like the Peloton and Variis bikes, but also it’s easy to watch YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc on it. (as opposed to being forced to subscribe to their app forever). And you can wear normal gym shoes or snap in with cycling shoes. Delivery and ordering: Very seamless. I ordered on a Thursday night. The tablet arrived by Sunday. The bike was delivered the following Friday afternoon, marking about 8 days from clicking buy to delivery, which is considerably less time than the Peloton — which can be up to 10 weeks for their newest bike with the rotating screen. The Stryde bike was heavy as hell, but my husband was able to drag it up the stairs, and we were able to put it together in about 30 minutes. I’ve heard that Stryde’s customer service is great, but I haven’t had to use it yet. Bike: I really like the Stryde bike. It’s a lot cheaper than a Peloton ($1550 vs. $2000+), arrived faster, and it rides really smoothly. It’s not ugly in my bedroom. The monitor is big. There’s space for weights in the back (does not come with weights, but it easily fits the 2-lb weights I already had at home), and space for two water bottles in the front. I think the resistance might be a little glitchy -- sometimes the screen doesn’t immediately reflect how many turns of the knob, but I don’t know if that’s because I’ve only had it for two weeks and am still getting the hang of it. The monitor does not turn and rotate, but it does come pre-loaded with Netflix, etc. There was one adjustment knob near the seat that was awkwardly hitting my leg, so I just unscrewed it, and it’s fine. I’m a 5’2 woman, and it’s a comfortable fit. Styde App: I actually love the app. Stryde partners up with a bunch of popular local studio chains from around the country, and I’ve found that High Ride Cycle in Denver is my favorite! They have the best choreography!!! And they’ve actually made me like spinning, which has been a great surprise. And honestly, I sometimes find the Peloton app weirdly intimidating (the Peloton instructors are like “I was Beyonce’s backup dancer!” and the Stryde app is a little more chill and accessible with instructors of all different body types, but with no less energy. In fact, when I look at my stats on my Fitbit, I get more cardio and peak heart rates with Stryde than Peloton). The Stryde app does some weird glitchy things, though. If you pause the workout, and then resume it, all the stats are messed up. If you’re somebody who likes to meticulously track all your stats, this would probably annoy you a lot. I don’t care that much. The app only has spinning classes, and it’s only on Android, so I can’t log on from my iPhone (which I haven’t felt the need to do anyway). The app costs $29 a month. Peloton App on the Stryde bike: You have to download it from the APK Mirror site because Google Play doesn’t work on a monitor the size of the bike’s. It was very easy. I watched a YouTube video to figure out how, and I saw some comments where people said they contacted Stryde customer service for help if needed. The Peloton app is only $12.99 a month across devices (as opposed to $39 a month on the Peloton bike), which I assume is because you don’t get as many stats. I don’t really care because I don’t follow the resistance etc religiously… but if you are somebody who does, then you probably just want to get the Peloton. The app also has lots of other classes, like barre, yoga, HIIT, etc., which I haven’t tried yet. Because this app’s price is so affordable, I will likely keep it AND the Stryde app until I’m back to the gym… Even though I honestly like the Stryde classes better. I also considered a Variis (SoulCycle) bike, but decided against it because it’s even more expensive and I’m just not obsessed with spinning. But because I look at spinning as just one facet of my exercise routine and don’t want to be locked into a high monthly subscription fee, the Stryde is perfect for me. Overall, I’ve been working out on the Stryde bike every day since I got it! I’ve been having a lot of fun bouncing between the Stryde and Peloton apps, and sometimes just listening to podcasts. When the pandemic is over, I probably won’t use the bike every day, but it’s an awesome workout when I'm largely stuck in my house and juggling work and my kids and the insanity of 2020.
Philips announced this November the release of its new budget projectors, the Neopix Easy 2+ (720p resolution, no wireless, 150€), Prime 2 (720p resoltion, wireless, 200€) and Ultra 2 (1080p, wireless, 250€). I just bought the NeoPix Ultra 2, and as I didn't find any review on the web, I thought I'll make my own review. Some background information: I'm interested in projectors since I organized a movie club during my college years in 2000. I've got a cheap Chinese projector (480p resolution) as a present 3 years ago, and now I decided to upgrade it to a full HD projector. I was reticent about buying a Chinese projector (you never know what you get, sometimes they are advertised as fullHD, and in the feedback you can see it’s only 480p), but when I saw that Philips released some budget projectors, I decided to buy one. A few words about the NeoPix Ultra 2 NPX642; this is Philips top device from the NeoPix line, released recently, in November 2020. It's quite compact. It has full-HD (1080p) native resolution, WiFi and Bluetooth. It's also a "smart projector" (as in smart TV) with Philips OS embedded. I'm using the projector to watch movies at home; I prefer this instead of a television as it's quite cheap and it doesn't take as much place, it can be tucked away anytime. Basics The projector is quite compact, much smaller than its predecessor, the NeoPix Ultra; only slightly bigger than the Chinese projector. The build quality is okay. The connectors are standard: 2 HDMI, 1 VGA, 1 USB, headphone jack, AV port and a microSD slot. It has WiFi and Bluetooth for wireless connectivity. It also comes with a remote control. The cooling isn't as loud as my old projector (which made the sound of a tractor), it's not disturbing during a movie, but I think it still could be quieter. At this price range don't expect miracles. There's a small adjustable foot to set the angle, which can be used to fix the projector on a tripod. Image and sound quality The image quality is good. The image is sharp even at the corners, the resolution is great, you can read even the small text. The colors are lifelike. It's really miles better than my old projector The image is visible even if there is some light (good for presentations in an office), but for good contrast it's better to be in a dark room. The keystone correction is digital: it means that the image is a bit distorted so the projected image is square. In theory this degrades the image, but thanks to the high resolution it isn't noticeable at all. It's much better solution than the keystone correcting lenses in budget projectors (which degrade a lot the projected image). An advantage of the digital correction is that it can correct the horizontal distortions too with 4 corner correction. A neat feature is the automatic keystone correction which uses the internal gyroscopes to get the angle of the projector. The image can be flipped and rotated for back projection or ceiling mounting. There are several image presets (cinema, eco, vivid...) and the usual parameters (white balance, brightness, contrast, sharpness...) The projector has two 5W speakers, which is OK for a room. Wireless connectivity
Wi-Fi: It works well, it connected to my router without problems, I could update the firmware and watch Youtube videos...
Bluetooth: I could pair the provided remote control and a wireless keyboard, but nothing else. It didn't detect my phone or any bluetooth audio device (speaker or headphone). What the fuck??? This should be a basic feature! I have no idea what causes this, but I'm afraid it's a general problem, not a faulty chip. Hope this can be fixed by a firmware update.
Miracast, AirPlay: I tested the Miracast from a computer and a phone. There is a few seconds lag and the video is a bit choppy. So it can be good for presentations, but not for movies/games.
Remote control: It's connected by Bluetooth, and besides basic menu navigation it also has a virtual pointer (mouse cursor) for the smart projector. The pointer barely moves very slowly if I move the remote slowly - so it gets off center quickly, I have to shake it to get back the pointer. Not very intuitive.
Smart projector Now we are getting to the ugly part. Don't get me wrong, it's not completely rubbish. It has a few apps, like Firefox, YouTube, Netflix and VLC. So the basic is there, this could be enough for most of what you need. VLC is one of the best media players, it will accept any file format, it's miles ahead of the useless media players included in other projectors. But this is all you get, there is no store to get other apps (so no Diney+ or Amazon). There is also a settings menu with a few basic settings. Unfortunately several settings are missing, like the keyboard layout for external keyboards. As I'm a quite technical person, I started to dig deeper, and it took only a few minutes to discover that "PhilipsOS" is actually a reskinned and oversimplified Android 6.0. I mean WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, PHILIPS???!!! Release an Android 6 device after Android 11 was released? Okay, it should be enough to power a projector, but still! Worse, it was probably written by an intern in a shady chinese startup (based on the forgotten Chinese references...) Same with the hardware. It has a 4-core 1.4GHz processor and 1GB RAM(!!!), 16GB ROM (6GB free), so it's something like 8 years old technology. The problem is that this is under-powered even for Android 6 (especially the RAM), so I got several crashes and choppy playback for Youtube; Firefox is also slow. C'mon! For 10 more cents they could get a much better SOC, not this garbage. Anyway, the advantage of discovering that it runs Android is that I could install apps! Yipee! First I installed F-droid as third party app store and a few more apps I downloaded from the Play store (most apps will run on Android 6). So I could get Kodi media center, Arte TV, Midori browser, etc. Much better! I repeat, don't expect much from the hardware, but adding a few apps increases considerably the usability of this interface. Conclusion The good: - Image quality, resolution, nice colors - Keystone correction - Sound is OK - Good connectivity - VLC media player - Possibility to install apps (even if it's cumbersome) The bad: - Bluetooth audio not working - Miracast not really usable - Remote control could be better The ugly: - Underspecced hardware - Android 6.0 (even if it's called PhilipsOS) - Bugs This projector was a letdown for me. I mean it mostly does what it's made for, but it is more like a noname Chinese product sold by a shady seller on Alibaba. I wasn't expecting this from a Philips product. It has so many obvious bugs, that I'm sure there was no QA on this product. That said, if you need a budget HD projector, it's OK - as long as you'll use a HDMI source or watch your local videos from a microSD card (VLC is a great media player). The image quality - while it cannot be compared to a good television set - is good, the 1080p resolution produces sharp images. But if you expect anything from the smart projector part, it will disappoint you. Note that you can install Android apps from APK files using the included file browser.
Hi, I am new to Vanced. I got new galaxy brand 2020 model android tablet with 2000x1200 resolution display and official youtube app only allow upto 1080P playback so I tried to use Youtube Vanced to override maximum resolution. Still 1440P and 4K menu appears but plays no picture. only sound.
Tried default codec but still no picture.
(By the way, non-root version and Android 10) What step did I miss? I need community's help.
[Mobile Game: Fate/Grand Order] How a third party app provider managed to piss off the production company of one of the highest grossing mobile games
I've been an avid reader of HobbyDrama for a long time, but this is my first time making a post, so please tell me if there are any errors or things I should elaborate on to improve! I'll try to make this as accurate as possible, but due to language limitations I may miss some information, so I apologize in advance for that. Please also note that there are possible spoilers (although very minor) for the Fate series, Fate/Grand Order in particular.
Background
The drama mainly revolves around Qooapp and the mobile game Fate/Grand Order (website) (Android, iOS). Who, or what, is Qooapp? Qooapp is a third party app provider based in Hong Kong for devices that use Android as their operating system. Qooapp in particular prides itself on being "a professional platform specializing in anime games", among other things, and is used by many in the anime community to access and download Japanese, Korean, and Chinese apps. While it's not always safe to use third party app providers, Qooapp is one that is highly regarded and commonly recommended to Android users interested in playing overseas games. If it's not safe, why use a third party app store? While Apple's Appstore and Google's Playstore are considered official appstores, there will always be certain apps unavailable to you due to digital rights/copyrights (commonly known as region-lock). This is where third party appstores come in; they allow you to download region-locked apps without the need to change your Playstore or Google account region, and operate just like the Playstore would, keeping track of the apps on your phone and providing updates whenever they are available. Qooapp is a very commonly used and trusted third party appstore, but not all third party appstores are held in the same regard. Also note that third party appstores are commonly used by Android users, due to Android users being able to directly download apps/apks off the web. Apple users, for better or for worse, have to go through the process of creating a new Apple account in the region of the apps they want to use. What exactly is Fate/Grand Order? There's a pretty good chance that you've heard of the Fate series (confusing chart, I know) at least once due to its vast amount of content, from its original visual novel, several different anime series (Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero, etc.), its video games, its light novels, mangas, etc. Even if you're unfamiliar with all of these, if you use the internet often, there's a good chance that you probably know of Saber, the genderbent King Arthur (dubbed Altria/Artoria by the game), who is basically the face of the franchise. If the title of the game didn't already give it away, Fate/Grand Order is also a part of this already expansive series. The Wikipedia article covers this pretty well, but long story short, Fate/Grand Order (more commonly known as FGO), is an extremely popular Japanese mobile game developed by Delightworks and published by Aniplex (a production company owned by Sony) that took part in the production of many well-known series such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Swordart Online. FGO's gameplay (note that the link includes spoilers for FGO's prolouge) is a mix of visual novel, turn-based combat, and a gacha based summoning system. The main draws of the game would most likely be the gacha summoning system, which allows players to collect their favorite characters from the Fate franchise, followed by the highly praised writing of the game's main storyline. The appeal of the game was so great that following the release of the Japanese version (JP) in 2015, FGO would release two Chinese versions (one for mainland China and one for Taiwan), followed by a North American version (NA) and Korean version (KR) in 2017. (Unsure of the release dates for the Chinese versions, but they were released before NA and KR). An arcade game (exclusive to Japan) was even released in 2018, along with an anime adaptation of the game's 7th chapter released last year, with another one adapting the 6th chapter in the works.
So how exactly are these related?
Even before the release of the original Japanese game in 2015, there was already a pretty wide overseas audience for Fate, most likely due to the 2014 anime adaptation of the visual novel Fate/Stay Night's Unlimited Blade Works route. When FGO was released in 2015, many overseas players turned to third party appstores to download the game due to the game being region-locked, Qooapp being one of them. Eventually, Qooapp would also provide access to the other four vesions of FGO as well, with FGO becoming one of the top downloaded games on Qooapp. This is especially important, as even though there are so many versions of the game and NA is often treated as the "global" version, all the versions are region-locked to their specific regions (KR to Korea, NA to North America, etc.), meaning that player who didn't live in one of the five regions were unable to download the game. Many players (myself included) played more than one version of the app, but by far the most popular version is the original Japanese one, even with the release of the North American version, which provided the game in English. For context, the JP server recently celebrated their 20 million downloads campaign, whereas the NA version (arguably the second most popular version) only just celebrated its 10 million downloads campaign. This is likely in part due to the JP version being the oldest version of the game and being the furthest ahead content wise. The NA version, due to being released two years after the JP version, was two years behind content wise, so those who started with the JP version likely stuck with it or played both, even if they couldn't understand the language (not that this was a problem; the fanbase is large, so many translations are eaily found on websites like the wiki and the subreddit grandorder). Many fans who only play the NA version also actively follow the JP version for news, as we recieve mostly the same content, just two years later (for example, an event occuring in July of 2021 for the Japanese server will likely occur July of 2023 for the NA server; we jokingly refer to the NA server as having Clairvoyance, which is also the name of a skill a highly sought after FGO character possesses).
So what happened?
Following the NA server's 3rd anniversary, the JP server of FGO is currently celebrating its 5th anniversary, which they called "under the same sky", filled with plenty of news, giveaways, and new characters to pull for. Everyone, regardless of server, was excited to hear the news, and many were especially excited due to the addition of the newest character of... Artoria? Many were excited for her, whether it was because they could finally complete their Artoria collection, for the memes, for her strong skills, or simply because they genuinely liked her and all of her versions) (I wish I was joking), or maybe all of the above. At the same time, FGO is currently celebrating summer with swimsuit versions of many characters (fanservice galore). Besides these, FGO announced a guaranteed SSR (GSSR) banner, which, as the name suggests, is a gacha that guarantees you an SSR (the highest rarity) character, but only if you pay with real money. The GSSR banner, the swimsuit characters, and the newest Artoria addition would cause many JP server players to "whale", which is gamer speak for spending vast amounts of money on the game in hopes of acquiring what you want (the characters in this instance). The final bit of news announced would be the release of a spin-off/side game called "Fate/Grand Order: Waltz in the Moonlight Lostroom" (also referred to as FGOW or just Waltz). FGOW is a 3D rhythm game featuring one of the game's main and mascot characters, Mash Kyrielight, who is beloved by many fans due to her role in the game. It would be available for free on the App Store and Google Play, but only amaximum of 550,000 downloads would be allowed. After that, the app will be hidden from the app stores. Whether or not the original FGOW app was region locked, I don't know. I've seen people claim that it wasn't, but I have no confirmation on this. What I can confirm, however, was that Qooapp also put FGOW onto its own store, allowing people from all regions to access it. What I can also confirm was that FGOW reached its download limit on August 12th, causing it to be taken down from the App and Play Stores, while Qooapp's FGOW app was up until at least the 15th, if not even longer, thus allowing any user of Qooapp to download FGOW well past the 550,000 people limit. On August 18th, Qooapp suddenly posted a notice informing users that they would no longer be able to provide updates for any Fate/Grand Order related games, meaning that not only was FGO Waltz no longer available, neither was any version of the FGO game itself. The pages for each game itself are still up due to the large community on those pages, but the apps no longer avaible for download off of Qooapp as of the time of writing.
The Effect
Understandably, the FGO players who used Qooapp to download and update FGO were all extremely upset, regardless of the version of the game they played. While the exact reason for no longer providing FGO was unclear other than Qooapp's claim of "changes in the developer's overseas strategies", the common consensus is that it was due to Qooapp allowing their users to bypass the 550,000 downloads limit on FGOW, thus upsetting the Japanese playerbase and Anixplex, the publisher's of the game. Of course, reactions were mixed. Note that this is all happening during the summer celebration and the 5th anniversary, so many people likely sunk a lot of money on the game to try to get their favorite characters. Many people were mad, some at Qooapp for uploading FGOW, some at Aniplex/Delightworks (the game producers) for region locking their games or for making an anniversary game limited. Some saw it as a good time to finally quit playing FGO, or just left Qooapp. Some were just confused while others were trying to help by recommending alternatives, such as APKPure and TapTap, other third party appstores that are commonly used, or by making guides on how to create a Japanese Playstore account. Others were just afraid of even tighter region-locks. Some made jokes and memes, while players who didn't rely on Qooapp just watched it unfold. Another group of people didn't seem to believe that 2020 could get any worse (likely a reference to the shutdown of one of the biggest anime/manga piracy websites earlier this week... or maybe Covid). Qooapp most likely lost a large amount of users, as many seemed to use Qooapp exclusively to play FGO. Other third party app providers most likely gained Qooapp's lost users, namely APKPure and TapTap.
A third party app provider named Qooapp released a limited side app of the popular mobile game Fate/Grand Order (FGO) for more than the alloted number of people, causing the developers to force Qooapp to remove all versions FGO from its store. Many overseas players were then unable to update their accounts using Qooapp, causing them to have to use other methods if they wished to continue playing. People were upset at both Qooapp and at the developers for various reasons. Edit: Fixed some grammatical errors and a mistake in description

I would recommend configuring your hotkeys in Retroarch in a similar fashion: Enable Hotkeys : Right Joy Click Menu : Left Joy Click Exit : Back Button Load State : L Bumper Save State : R Bumper : "Configure controllers in all previously mentioned emulators! Retroarch is the easiest to set up controllers, some require more than one layout such as the N64 for some of the FPS games which had strange control schemes. For specific configuration of the Dolphin emulator I would suggest setting the forced clock speed to 65% under general and turn on all the checkboxes. Under graphics options enable vulkan and at the bottom of the page under hacks turn everything on except immediate xfb. With these settings I am able to play soul calibur at full speed. Only other game that needs adjustments from this is Simpsons Hit’n Run which needs slightly lower clock rate to run at a playable speed."
